Although Edward Coleman did not ride under National Hunt rules for long, he did manage ten wins, all in 1909. He opened his account with a double at Lingfield Park on March 17, using contrasting tactics. He sat last early in the Bletchingley Selling Chase and then brought Perdicus through to win quite comfortably, while he led all the way on the nine-year-old Turbulent to land the March Handicap Hurdle.

Both horses were owned by the leading amateur rider Captain Leon Denny, who also supplied Edward with a ride on the Flat when he partnered Victor Leon, which finished unplaced in the Stanford Selling Plate at Folkestone on October 30.

A month earlier, Edward had ridden what proved to be his last winner over jumps when Zingarella, owned by another very good amateur rider, George Nugent, won the Chilham Selling Hurdle at Wye by 15 lengths.

Although he held a licence in 1910 he did not ride another winner.

Edward Coleman’s wins were, in chronological order:

1. Perdicus, Lingfield Park, March 17, 1909

2. Turbulent, Lingfield Park, March 17, 1909

3. Sight, Hawthorn Hill, March 22, 1909

4. Perdicus, Plumpton, April 10, 1909

5. Pat McCann, Portsmouth Park, April 12, 1909

6. Perdicus, Plumpton, April 19, 1909

7. Sight, Portsmouth, May 5, 1909

8. Zingarella, Isle of Wight, May 14, 1909

9. King Thistle, Newton Abbot, August 2, 1909

10. Zingarella, Wye, September 27, 1909

Edward Coleman scored a first and last race double at Lingfield on March 17 1909 with Perdicus and Turbulent.
