Ernest Victor Broad won two juvenile hurdle races on the three-year-old Alfresco during the autumn of 1931.

Owned and trained by former leading amateur rider George Poole at Findon, in Sussex, Alfresco already had one unplaced outing to his name prior to teaming up with Ernest for the first time in the Springfield Optional Selling Hurdle at Chelmsford on October 12, 1931. They won by a length from De Props, ridden by future successful trainer Matt Feakes.

Nine days later, they followed up at Cardiff in the Cardiff Juvenile Selling Hurdle, this time winning by only half a length. Tim Cullinan, who had won the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle the year before, was second on Pots And Pans.

Ernest had two more chances on Alfresco, finishing unplaced both times before the gelding was sold to Italy. Although Ernest held a licence until the 1933/34 season he did not ride another winner.
