Herman Cooper
Article by Alan Trout
Herman Cooper had 11 wins over jumps in the first decade of the 20th century, starting with a comfortable win on Tipster in the Hallow Hurdle at Worcester on April 30, 1907. Owned and trained by top amateur jockey Jack Rogers, the four-year-old was winning for the first time on his sixth start and had 15 lengths to spare at the finish.
Herman added two more victories before the end of the year, then managed seven in 1908, including a winner on both days of Pershore’s May meeting, landing the Pensham Selling Handicap Hurdle on What’s Up and the Avon Selling Chase on Psyche.
However, his only success in 1909 came when L’Abbes May took the Chepstow Hurdle at that course on March 23. Less than two months later he had his final ride on Diomed, who was unplaced in the Innkeepers’ Selling Hurdle at Wenlock Hunt on May 7.
