Phil Arrowsmith Chaloner was the fourth son of jockey Tom Chaloner. He was apprenticed to Martin Gurry and had his first ride in public on Miss Nellie at Newmarket on July 2, 1890. He finished last.
He rode eight winners on the Flat in 1893 before going on to ride over jumps. He made his National Hunt debut at Newmarket on December 3, 1896, finishing third on Jessie Soden in the Links Hurdle Plate.
He later trained with a fair measure of success up until his death, aged 35, of pneumonia on April 19, 1910. He left a widow and three children. He was buried in Newmarket Cemetery.
