Charles Boulton

Article by Alan Trout

Charles Boulton made a promising start to his career as a jump jockey with eight wins in 1922, including a treble at Hexham. However, he subsequently managed only six more in six years.

His first win came at Sedgefield on April 5, 1922, when riding Credentials to a four-length victory in the Windlestone Open Handicap Hurdle. The four-year-old followed this up with further successes at Wetherby’s Easter meeting and Hexham’s Whitsun fixture. The latter occasion, on Saturday, June 3, was the middle leg of a treble for Charles, initiated by Mr Jolly in the three-mile handicap chase and completed by Gamebook in the selling chase. He won again on Mr Jolly at Perth in September that year.

Kissing Song, trained at Cheltenham by recently retired top National Hunt jockey Alf Newey, did well for Charles, winning three selling hurdles in the mid-1920s.

His last victory was on Clear The Way in the Juvenile Hurdle at Newton Abbot on September 19, 1928. It meant that during his career he had ridden a winner at Britain’s most northerly racecourse, Perth, and its most southerly, Newton Abbot. He continued to hold a licence until the 1936/37 season but had no further success.
