Captain Charles Banbury, fondly known as 'Cakes'

Charles & Sprinkle Me

Born on 11 February 1877, Captain Charles William Banbury rode Sprinkle Me to successive victories in the 1909-1910 Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown.

He also won the Aldershot Gold Cup and the United Service Hunters' Cup.

He played polo for the Coldstreams and rowed for his college.

The son of MP Sir Frederick Banbury of Southam, he was educated at Eton and Oxford University. 

Charles served in the South African War with the Coldstream Guards: he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1901 and Captain in 1909.

He was wounded twice at the battle of Aisne on 14 September 1914, and died two days later at Soupir.

Charles is buried in Soupir communal cemetery, Aisne in France.
