He was educated at Eton and Oxford-his family were landowners in Wensleydale-and in Victorian times was an amateur rider who rode winners in six different countries. The Squire of Jervaulx Abbey owned racehorses until he was 100, though none was of great distinction, and served as a steward at Catterick.
The WL and Hector Christie Memorial Trophy Chase at Catterick in January is run partly in his memory; Hector Christie, his son, trained Fortina to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1947.
William Christie died in 1962 aged 103.
