Philip Denis Carey rode nine winners over jumps in the first half of the 1990s.
He began as a conditional with Bill Turner and it was on one his horses, The Slater, that he had a comfortable first success when the seven-year-old led from the second last flight to win the E.B.F. National Hunt Novices’ Hurdle (Qualifier) at Wincanton on March 5, 1992 by 12 lengths.
After two more wins over the next few months he teamed up with trainer Robert Alner and had six more victories spread over three years, including two each on handicap chasers Court Rapier and Betty Hayes.
He had his last success at Folkestone on November 20, 1995, when Vicosa led throughout and narrowly held the challenge of Dante’s Delight by a short head to win the Daily Mail Novices’ Handicap Chase. It was compensation for having been beaten a neck on their previous start at Newbury 12 days earlier. However, Phil never rode Vicosa again.
Phil Carey’s winners were, in chronological order:
1. The Slater, Wincanton, March 5, 1992
2. Crazy Daisy, Warwick, May 9, 1992
3. Cleeveland Lady, Bangor-on-Dee, October 10, 1992
