Charles Carroll

1848 - 1867

Charles Henry Carroll was born in Manchester on October 9, 1848, the son of Irishman Michael Carroll, a fustian (cloth) shearer. He was apprenticed to John Osborne Snr when aged 12.

He had his first ride on a horse named Weasel at Liverpool in April 1861. That horse also gave him his first winner at Pontefract on July 11, 1861.

He finished third in the 1865 jockeys’ table with 82 winners, behind George Fordham and Jem Grimshaw. Also that year he won the Lincolnshire Handicap on Gailey, the Northumberland Plate on Brown Bread, and the Liverpool Spring Cup on Nu. In 1866 he won the Portland Handicap on Skylark.

Sadly, he was badly hurt when his mount, Shadwell, fell when rounding the turn into the straight at Edinburgh on October 4, 1867. He died of his injuries three days later.

Although he was born in the same city and in the same era as fellow jockey William Carroll and, like William, served his apprenticeship with John Osborne Snr, the two men were not related.
