Andrew Crook

Andrew Crook, from Ripon. North Yorks., was born on April 19, 1955, and served his apprenticeship with Frank Carr.

His first winner was Irish Word at Leicester on May 28, 1973.

Retained by T. A. Gillam and Steve Nesbitt (for whom he rode seven winners), he won the Chesterfield Handicap at York on the cantankerous Ubedizzy (October 6, 1977).

His best season came in 1976 with five winners.

Andrew married Margaret Nesbitt (daughter of Steve) on January 21, 1978.

When away from the saddle, Andrew enjoyed shooting and ferreting

He turned to training in 2002, winning 18 races in his very first season. He continued in good form the next, sending out Rylaux (from his Ashgill Stables, Coverham) to win the 2003 Scottish Grand National.
