Lewis Coughtrey

Lewis Coughtrey

Article by Alan Trout

Born in 1906, Lewis Edward Coughtrey had a few rides on the Flat in 1931, plus one in 1932, without a win. He held a full licence when he started riding in Britain and was at least 24 years old, which makes it almost certain that he had begun his career elsewhere.

He had his first ride at Birmingham on June 8, 1931 when finishing last of 14 on Henwood in the Croft Two-Year-Old Selling Plate. Other rides were equally unproductive and it appeared that he might just be a one season visitor.

However, right at the end of 1932 he rode an unnamed two-year-old gelding by Duncan Gray out of May Mor in the Dunchurch Selling Plate at Warwick on November 23. Again, his mount finished unplaced, and that was that as far as Lewis Coughtrey’s British riding career was concerned.

Lewis's first ride in Britain: Henwood, 1931.

Lewis's last ride in Britain: May Mor, 1932.
