Henry Crunden, aged about 25, fell from Ruff's Guide at Isle of Wight Steeplechases on April 14, 1868.
The horse fell on top of him and he died two days later. The fall was caused by a dog.
He was buried at Gatcomb Church by the racecourse and a fund for his family was set up.
Henry was born in Lewes in 1843.
