1907 - 1985

George Bowden, born in Wales on December 8, 1907, was a journeyman National Hunt jockey of the 20s, living at Holmes View, Port Road, Barry, Glam.

His riding weight was 10 stone.

In 1928 he won the Welsh Grand National on Miss Balscadden, yet always insisted that Breconian was the best horse he sat on.

The first recorded win of George's which I could find in the database came on Dropitin at Salisbury in the Yorkshire Handicap Plate on July 8, 1925.

George Bowden was one of the few twentieth-century jockeys to ride in both the Epsom Derby & Grand National. He came last in the 1927 Derby on 1,000-1 shot Stampede.

George's last ride came on Almond Joy at Worcester on March 5 1951.

George Bowden died in Pontypridd in January 1985 aged 77.
