Richard Chaloner, born at Malton on October 29, 1873, was the jockey who rode Parlington to win the Great Metropolitan at Epsom in 1890. He won the same race the following year on Ragimunde.
He then won the Cesarewitch on the same horse.
Including this victory, he rode 76 winners that season; the following year - 1892 - he rode a further 51 before becoming a successful jump jockey.
Richard was just eight years old when he rode his first winner at Aylsham, Norfolk.
After a long illness, he died of a chill at Newmarket on Sunday, November 15, 1936, aged 63. Richard, a Roman Catholic, was buried at Newmarket Cemetery at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, 18 November 1936.
