Daniel James Paul Barry had four wins over jumps in the early 1990s. A conditional jockey with leading northern trainer Gordon W. Richards, he had his first success when partnering 5-2 favourite Candlebright to victory for him in the January Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Doncaster on January 26, 1990. The pair had finished second, beaten half a length, at Carlisle eleven days earlier.
Danny had one more start on the six-year-old at Ayr the following month, finishing third, before other jockeys took over, and he had to wait until January 22, 1992 for a second success. This came when Sweet City, also trained by Gordon W. Richards, led all the way to win the Ayr New Year Handicap Hurdle by three lengths.
At the same course on March 7, Danny and Sweet City won again, this time coming from behind to lead at the last flight and land the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cup Handicap hurdle by a length and a half.
Sweet City also provided Danny with his fourth and final victory at Kelso on December 17, 1992, overhauling West With The Wind on the run-in and taking the M and G Securities Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by five lengths. They had three more starts together but only managed two fourth places.
