Tom Adams
1871 - 1923
Tom Stone Adams, born at Bourton-on-the-Hill in 1871, was the son of trainer William James Adams, for whom he rode.
We first catch sight of young Tom as a fifteen-year-old riding Saphia in an Epsom Nursery on Wednesday, October 6th, 1886. Claiming 5lbs, Tom finished last.
Ten years later, he was declared bankrupt: his father had cited Tom's gambling debts as a cause of his own bankruptcy just a year earlier.
The 1911 census shows Tom then described as a racecourse trainer.
He died in 1923, aged 53, and was buried in Epsom Cemetery on May 16.
