Howard Cheshire

(1896 -1971)


National Hunt jockey Howard Joseph Cheshire was born on December 23, 1896. He rode 36 winners over jumps including the County Hurdle at Cheltenham’s National Hunt Meeting. 

Howard made his debut under NH rules when finishing unplaced on Stamp in the Tredegar Three-Year-Old Optional Selling Hurdle at Newport on November 8, 1922. He achieved his first victory on 100-6 chance Aledia in the Henley Selling Handicap Hurdle at Shirley Park on March 5, 1923. 

Howard enjoyed his most successful season in 1926/27 with 13 winners, the only time he rode more than five in a season. They included his greatest success in the 1927 County Handicap Hurdle on 7-1 chance Rolie for Kinnersley trainer Tom Rimell. 

He rode his last winner on Furane in the Dean Prior Selling Handicap Hurdle at Buckfastleigh on May 26, 1931, surviving an objection by the rider of the second for bumping. 

He rode for the final time when finishing unplaced on Norah’s Choice in the Malvern Wells Maiden Hurdle at Colwall Park on April 15, 1935.

Howard Cheshire died in 1971, aged 74.
