George Ashworth

George Ashworth was born in Prestwich, Lancs., and became apprenticed to Thomas Cliff.
His first ride came on Hereward at Sutton Park, Birmingham, on July 9, 1869.
His first winner was Prince at Derby on August 31, 1869.
George's biggest wins included: 1875 Irish Derby (Innishowen), 1872 Cambridgeshire (Playfair) and the 1872 Shrewsbury Cup (Indian Ocean).
He died at Manchester on July 21, 1900, leaving £80.
