Captain Broadley

Captain Broadley was the rider on board The Chandler when, on March 22, 1847, it won the Leamington Hunt Cup at Warwick on its second racecourse appearance. The Chandler, carrying 11 st. 7 lbs, refused at several fences, yet still won by twenty lengths. It was in this race that The Chandler made his sensational thirty-seven feet leap across a swollen brook, witnessed by William Archer, father of Fred and Charles, who was in attendance that afternoon.

Captain Broadley, that year, also had his solitary ride in the Grand National, Avoca, which ran unplaced at 14-1 behind Matthew.

The first important steeplechase Captain Broadley rode in was the 1844 Grand Military, run at Northampton. Riding Hamburg, he finished a gallant second behind Brenda, ridden by Captain Deane. Boxkeeper, the 7-2 favourite, finished third with Mr Peel finishing fourth on Lord Cardigan's Waterwitch.

Following this, Captain Broadley's career took off, and he rode with great success in all the principal jump races all over the country.
