Steve Clark
Article by Alan Trout
Steve Clark rode a couple of winners under National Hunt rules in the 1970s. He was apprenticed to David Chapman and had his first ride when My Jane was pulled up in the Slaley Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Hexham on May 12, 1971.
He had to wait until the meeting at Uttoxeter on October 13, 1973 for his first win. It came in the Osmaston Selling Hurdle when Tweedbred took the lead on the flat and beat Fay-Bel by two and a half lengths. Steve kept the ride for the next two starts and was placed both times before Colin Tinkler took over without success.
It was not until the closing days of the following season that Steve scored for a second time when Rolus took the lead at the last flight and ran on to land the Shire Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle at Hexham on May 24, 1975, again by two and a half lengths. That was also Steve’s last ride, so at least he went out on a winner.
