Born in 1887, Frederick Bedford rode one winner over jumps in each of four seasons. His first success was at Colwall Park on November 7, 1910, when riding Pericite to an eight-length victory in the Ledbury Selling Hurdle. Future champion and Grand National-winning jockey Jack Anthony, still an amateur at the time, was second on King’s Thistle.

The Leasowes Maiden Hurdle at Bridgnorth on April 18, 1911 was Fred’s second success, courtesy of Confidence IV, who scored by 12 lengths. His third came on Easter Monday, April 8, 1912, when Japheth took the Grand Stand Selling Hurdle at Hereford.

He did not renew his licence for 1913 but returned after the war and began training in 1920, and it was back where he started that he had his final success as a jockey and one of his first as a trainer when Glenfarg won the Colwall Park Maiden Hurdle by 12 lengths on March 14, 1921. He did not renew either his jockey’s licence or his trainer’s licence after the 1926/27 season.
