George Crockett

Aged 19, British jockey George Crockett was killed on June 6 1954 in the Grand Prix Hippique, the biggest race of the Algiers season.

Crockett was riding the three-year-old Empereur Jean when, some 1500 yards from the start, it collided with two other horses, Goodbye Jones and Caruso. All three fell, dragging their jockeys with them.

George Crockett was trampled on by following horses and died on his way to hospital.
