Henry Cole

Captain Henry Cecil Lowry Cole was brought down when riding Heron at Sandown in the Maiden Steeplechase on Saturday, March 3, 1900.

The horse, Mr Thorp, fell at the water jump, and, in an effort to avoid it, Captain Cole fell from his mount, Heron. Mr J. Green, of Surbiton, who had witnessed the accident, said he went immediately to the Captain, who was lying stunned, face down. Mr Green said that he bathed the Captain's face until medical aid arrived. He was taken to the hospital at Sandown Park where he remained insensible until his death.

The unfortunate jockey had sustained concussion of the brain plus internal injuries and was unable to be moved from the course.

Aged 37, he died from his injuries on Tuesday afternoon at four on March 6, 1900, and was buried with full military honours on Friday, 9 March.

Twenty years earlier, another jockey, Mr St. James, had lost his life at the same jump.
