Derrick Bott

Article by Alan Trout

Derrick Bott rode just one winner under National Hunt rules. At Hereford on Easter Monday, March 29, 1948, he partnered Doctor Bill in a match for the Town Selling Handicap Chase. His rival Ross Burn was the 1-3 favourite which fell, leaving Derrick and Doctor Bill to come home alone.

The winner was owned by Lady Sibell Rowley, trained by Grand National-winning jockey Tim Hamey and usually ridden by his son Rex, but Derrick seized his opportunity on a busy Bank Holiday Monday.

He retained the ride for Doctor Bill’s two subsequent unplaced efforts, back at Hereford in April and at Newton Abbot in May. Despite holding a licence for the next two seasons, he did not manage another winner.
