James Brand rode three winners under National Hunt rules, all during the first half of 1938. First granted a licence for the 1936/37 season, it was not until January 18, 1938 that he had his first success when Garibaldi won the 25-runner Grangewood Hurdle at Derby by four lengths.
Garibaldi’s trainer, Tom Leader, also supplied James with his second victory when Kans took the Londesborough Maiden Hurdle at Southwell on March 19.
His third, and final, win came when Peer Gynt, making only his second start of the campaign, came home an easy winner of the Cambridgeshire Open Selling Handicap Chase at Huntingdon on Whit Monday, June 6. James renewed his licence for the following season but there were no more winners.
