Paul Roye Colquhoun, from Exning, near Newmarket, was born on May 26, 1955, and served a four-year apprenticeship with Michael Jarvis. He then served another four with Ian Walker.
He rode his first winner on My Avalon, trained by Michael Jarvis, in the St Neots Apprentice Handicap at Newmarket on August 11, 1973. There were five runners and the four-year-old beat Woodditton by three-quarters of a length.
On November 28, 1978, he married Rowena Berenice.
He rode 45 winners altogether, enjoying his best season in 1979 with 12 victories. The best horse he rode – though never won on – was Belmont Bay.
