Ernest Carr

1915 - 1996

Ernest Joseph Carr was born on October 19, 1915, and served his apprenticeship with Captain Boyd-Rochfort between 1930 - 1935.

Always known by his second Christian name, Joe Carr rode on the Flat as an apprentice before switching to jump racing between 1936 - 1940.

At Ludlow, in May, 1940, he suffered a dreadful fall which resulted in the loss of his right leg just above the knee.

His riding career terminated, he took out a trainer's licence in 1941. His two apprentice riders were W. Emmerson and D. Wiley.

Early successes came when winning the Caledonian Hunt Cup, Ripon Rowels, Wills Silver Goblets and Lanark Silver Bell.

Good horses in his stable included Salmon King, Mountain King, Sufi and Remraf.

Away from racing, Ernest enjoyed pigeon racing, coursing, fishing & boxing.

Joe Carr died on May 4, 1996, aged 80.
