Frank Cullen

Frank Richard Talbot Cullen, 27, fell at an open ditch Hurst Park on Friday 16 January 1920 when riding Hilarious in the Novices' Steeplechase, the first race of the day.

He was conscious after the fall and said he felt his neck snap.

He died the next day. A nephew of Mr P. W. Cullen, a famous Irish trainer of the times, Frank served in the Remount Department during the war.

After his demobilisation, he worked for the William Nightingall stables.

He lived with William Nightingall, the owner of Hilarious. He left a widow and one young son.

His funeral took place at Epsom on Jan 21, 1920.

A subscription raised £3,000.
