Tony Clark

Flat jockey Anthony Stephen Clark was born in Neath, Glamorgan on January 28, 1962, the son of a crane driver. He learned to ride when aged 14 and kept his own pony.

Tony became apprenticed to Guy Harwood, where he learned a lot from former jockeys Greville Starkey and Geoff Lawson. At one time he shared digs with jumps jockey Mark Perrett.

He had had his first ride in public on Ardent Portion at Warwick in 1978, finishing unplaced. He rode his first winner on Downderry in a seven-furlong nursery at Lingfield on August 11, 1979.

He rode mainly for Guy Harwood during his career and enjoyed his best season in 1984 with 29 winners. He achieved his greatest success when winning the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York in 1989 on Ile De Chypre.
