Bill Bullows

National Hunt jockey William (Bill) Bullows held a licence 1959 and 1966 and rode just three winners during that time. The first of those was gained in controversial circumstances at Towcester on Easter Monday 1960. Bill finished second in a two-mile handicap chase on Valiant Spark for Upper Lambourn trainer Major Edward Champneys but was subsequently awarded the race following an objection on technical grounds.

He had to wait until the end of December 1964 for his second win, which came on selling hurdler Dante’s Inferno at Fontwell for Lewes trainer Tom Gates. Later that same season he won a Wye handicap hurdle on Glentrust for Sussex permit holder David Browning. He also finished second three times and third three times from 33 rides that season.

Bill rode mostly moderate horses and suffered his share of falls, one of the less painful being from First Chapter in a Plumpton novices’ chase on November 16, 1964, photos of which appeared on the front page of the following day’s Sporting Life – it was the only time he made front page news.

Bill Bullows’ winners were:

1. Valiant Spark, Towcester, April 18, 1960

2. Dante’s Inferno, Fontwell Park, December 30, 1964

3. Glentrust, Wye, March 1, 1965
