Peter Cawkwell
Article by Alan Trout
Jump jockey Peter Cawkwell was apprenticed to Wetherby trainer Deryck Bastiman and had one win in the mid-1970s. His first ride was on Canyamel, finishing tailed off in the Swale Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle at Catterick on January 12, 1974.
He had his sole success on the four-year-old Coxmoor Maid, getting up in the closing stages of the Teesdale Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield on November 6, 1974 to land the prize by a neck from Silver Glint, the mount of Andrew Love. The winner had shown little in four previous starts that season, including with Peter on board for his most recent effort, also at Sedgefield, the previous month.
Peter kept the ride for two more unplaced efforts before David Munro took over in the saddle. Although he continued for three more seasons, he had few opportunities, finally relinquishing his licence in March 1978.
