John Cardwell

John Cardwell

John Cardwell, aged 23, a bookbinder from Beverley, fell from his horse whilst riding at Woodhouse Moor Races, near Leeds, on Friday, September 29 1854. The horse was owned by Mr Thomas Long, a Beverley spirit merchant.

John had won the first heat and was just taking the lead opposite the cricket ground in the second when the horse fell, pitching John onto his head. He was immediately taken to the Red Lion Inn at Woodhouse where the landlord, Mr Scholey, and Mr Ruddock, a Leeds surgeon, gave every assistance.

John never recovered and died from a fractured skull the following day at noon. At an inquest before Mr Blackburn, the Leeds coroner, that Monday, the jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death'.
