Tony Carroll

The son of Irish-born work rider Michael Carroll, Anthony William Carroll was born at Lambourn on February 26, 1957, and served his time with Pat Taylor, whom he joined straight from school.

He had his first ride, Hunting Song, at Newbury in 1972 and rode his first winner, Quite Sweet, at Brighton a year later.

Tony had 12 winners on the Flat before weight problems forced him over the sticks

He clocked up over 160 winners but, to his regret, never rode in the Grand National.

He retired in 1994 after winning on Jawani at Southwell and turned to training.

Tony's worst injury as a jockey was a broken leg.
