Frank Atkinson

1866 - 1953

Frank Buddle Atkinson was born at Barmoor, Castle Beale, Northumberland on September 4, 1866, and became a top amateur rider.

His family came from Bradford-on Avon but in fact he lived on a large estate he owned at Gallowhill House near Belsay in Northumberland.

He was in the 5th Lancers in 1885 and, in WW1, he joined the Durham Light Infantry, becoming a Captain.

Frank was twice-married.

His biggest win came on Leprechaun in the 1890 Great Metropolitan Chase.

He also won the 1895 National Hunt Chase on Finma-Coul ll and the 1895 National Hurdle on Knight of Rhodes.

His only ride in the Grand National - 1892, The Midshipman - fell.

Frank died at Hindhead, Surrey, on December 1, 1953, leaving £760,220.
