Nicky Carlisle was born on October 12, 1959, at Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
His parents were both doctors.
He stayed on at school and took two 'A' levels in Biology and Geography.
He started as one of the many apprentices who worked at Reg Hollinshead stable. His best season came in 1981 when he finished third in the apprentice championship with 24 winners.
He got plenty of rides, but, for the most part, was seen as a rather ineffective jockey.
He rode his first winner on Tina's Gold at Dunstall Park in September 1979.
His greatest moments came when winning the 1988 Ayr Gold Cup on So Careful and the 1991 Cesarewitch on Go South.
He also won at Epsom on Derby Day, 1984, riding Grand Harbour.
He became a BHA racecourse inspector after retiring from riding.
Nick's outside interests included hunting and skiing.
