Herbert Applin

1906 - 1995

Herbert George Applin was an amateur rider who lived at Ash, Stourpaine, Blandford, Dorset, and rode at 10 st.

He was born on March 7, 1906, and rode 25 winners over jumps. He rode in two Grand Nationals, 1939 and 1946, but fell on both occasions.

The highlight of his career was undoubtedly winning the 1941 National Hunt Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Forward (above).

Despite that, Herbert always claimed that the best horse he rode was Timber Wolf, which he rode to victory at Worcester on November 30, 1941.

He died on May 22, 1995, aged 89.
