George Calloway

1803 - 1871

George Callaway was the jockey on board Touchstone which won the 1834 St Leger.

George, born on April 24, 1803, in Stratford-on-Avon, also won the 1839 Goodwood Cup (Harkaway) and the Knutsford Gold Cup twice (Halston, 1829 & Birmingham 1831).

Having hung up his saddle, George became a publican at Lichfield (The Old Crown Inn, Bore Street).

He also became a racing official operating from the Turf Tavern, also in Bore Street.

George Callaway (sometimes spelt Calloway) died of asthma at Stafford Road, Lichfield on September 9, 1871.

He was 68.
