His biggest win came on Homefield when winning the 1973 Tennant Trophy for trainer Peter Poston.

As a five-pound claimer, Harry also rode Ted Smyth's Maxi's Taxi to a comfortable victory in the £3,500 Home Ales Gold Tankard at Nottingham on June 28, 1976.

Harry, for Lewes trainer Michael Masson, gave a great display on 11/2 Orient Boy at Brighton August 2, 1977. Told by Masson to make all the running, Harry did exactly what he was told and won by two lengths.

Harry And Masson hit a purple patch in August 1977, when winning six races together in a week.

Harry's apprenticeship finished in 1978, and he joined John Benstead's stable.

By the early 80s, he was struggling for rides. His last winner came on July 9, 1981 when kicking Blackbrook Melody home at Brighton, the meeting at which jockey Joe Blanks lost his life.

After riding on July 7, 1982, Harry took a sabbatical and was not seen on a racecourse until May 30, 1987.

Harry last rode on May 9, 1988, when taking the mount on Mend It for  N. Bycroft at Pontefract.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2012, Harry Ballantine - aged 53 and an alcoholic - was jailed for 12 months after admitting his fifth breach of a court order banning him from contacting his girlfriend.
