Born in 1948, Peter James Anderson rode over jumps for several seasons in the 1970s but only managed one win.
He had his first ride on the five-year-old Hill Breeze in the Coseley Selling Handicap Hurdle at Wolverhampton on January 8, 1973, never troubling the leaders and coming in eighth of the nine finishers.
A couple of months later he relinquished but was back in the saddle by October. He had his only success when Minestrone, the 3/1 on favourite, beat his sole opponent Coin Case in a match for the Mad Hatters Opportunity Selling Hurdle at Teesside Park on March 8, 1974. The six-year-old won by 15 lengths despite blundering at the last flight. Minestrone was trained at Staunton, Nottinghamshire by Jack Hardy, who was completing a double, having won the opening race on the card with Ben More, ridden by stable jockey Steve Holland.
It was the only time Peter rode the gelding, and although he continued for another three seasons there were no more victories. His last ride was on Iona Flyer, finishing tailed off in the Hallfield Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Wetherby on October 22, 1973.
He later trained for a couple of seasons, based Edgewood Stables, Longville, Much Wenlock, in Shropshire. His best horse was Edged Gold, placed on five successive occasions in the spring of 1988 before finally winning a Bangor novices’ chase early the following season. Edged Gold was also his final runner when pulled up at the same course on September 15, 1990.
