Thomas Bruckshaw

1853 - 1943

Thomas was born at Ashton-under-Lyne on August 27, 1853, and rode his first winner, at Lanark, in 1870.

He won the 1873 Cesarewitch on King Lud, the 1885 Yorkshire Oaks on St Helena and the same year's Molecombe Stakes on The Devil To Pay.

He rode 57 winners in 1876.

Following a serious race fall at Edinburgh in 1892, some sporting papers prematurely announced his death.

Forced to retire the following year, he began training.

Thomas lived to be ninety.

He died on November 14, 1943.
