It is possible that Joseph Frederick Barnard rode his first winner when Protectionist won the St Piers Selling Handicap Chase at Lingfield Park on November 30, 1895. If that was the case, then almost nine years elapsed before his next victory.
This also came at Lingfield Park, on February 20, 1904, when the five-year-old Shadwell landed the Surrey Selling Handicap Hurdle by a neck from Senator, the mount of Ernie Acres.
That was Joseph’s only win of the year, but 1905 went far better with five, all of them courtesy of Bell Sound, owned by Mr C. J. Habin. There was just one success in 1906 and two in 1907, with a final win coming on Peristalt in the Goring Hurdle at Plumpton on May 31, 1909. He did not renew his licence the following year.
