James Nicholas Burton, known as Jamie, was a conditional with Peter Bevan and rode three winners. His first mount was at Warwick on September 20, 1986, when Grisaille’s Double was pulled up in the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race.
It was not until February 15, 1988 that Jamie had his first win when Neltama, trained by former jump jockey Red Weaver, sprang a 50/1 surprise at Nottingham, taking the lead two flights out and having a length to spare over Invasion at the end of the Charnwood Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1). It was the trainer’s first win as well as the jockey’s.
He did not keep the ride on Neltama and had to wait until the Coverdale N.H. Flat Race at Southwell on December 20, 1989 for his second visit to the winner’s enclosure. By this time he was riding for Jimmy FitzGerald and it was on his Happyoates that he secured victory, taking the lead three furlongs out and staying on to beat stable companion Blacksburg by three lengths. The winning pair had finished second in their only previous start together that season.
Jamie had his third and last winner at Edinburgh (known today as Musselburgh) on February 16, 1990, when Solo Cornet ran on too strongly for Mr Woodcock and landed the Levy Board N.H. Flat Race by two lengths. The five-year-old Solo Cornet never ran again and Jamie had no more winners.
