Jeremy Corkell
Article by Alan Trout
Jeremy Dexter Corkell had 16 wins over jumps within the space of 19 months at the start of the 1990s, with 12 coming in his second season. All bar two of his victories were gained on horses trained by Mrs Vivien Aconley, for whom he rode as retained jockey. Mrs Aconley was based at Melrose Stud Feram, Westow, near York.
Jeremy’s first success was at Hexham on March 26, 1990, when the five-year-old Cosmic Ray overhauled Achiltibuie after the last flight and landed the Warden Novices’ Hurdle by two and a half lengths. The pair followed up at Wetherby three weeks later.
Jeremy won five races altogether on Cosmic Ray, as well as three on the novice handicap hurdler Carthagena Cottage.
His final victory came on the all-weather at Southwell on October 12, 1991 aboard First Lord, the five-year-old leading all the way and repelling the challenge of Autonomous to land the Autumn Leaves Handicap Hurdle by three-quarters of a length. They were only beaten a head on their next outing, at Newcastle on November 9, but that was as near as Jeremy came to winning another race.
