Danny Clare

On March 2, 1901, Danny Clare, aged 33, from Sidborough, near Tiverton, came down at the water at Sandown. His mount, Boa, then rolled over him.

Suffering from internal injuries, he was carried by ambulance to the paddock accident room where, at 5.30, he died.

Danny was in the habit of knotting his reins, a practice he had been warned against, and had promised to give up.

He left £255. A collection for his family raised a further £491.
