Fred Cheshire

1892 - 1921

Fred Cheshire, who lived at Orchard House, Bishops Canning, Wilts. was killed on Saturday December 10, 1921, while riding Cormac in the Oxshott Hurdle Handicap at Sandown Park.

Cormac fell after about six furlongs and Cheshire was dragged for a considerable distance.

Such were his injuries that he died shortly after being brought back to the stands.

In 1913, he had won the City & Suburban on Drinmore.

He died intestate, leaving property valued at £62. He also left a widow and three children.

Fred's death, the sixth on a racecourse in less than two years, prompted the first real action over jockey insurance; a letter to the Sporting life pointed out that the French Steeplechase Society already had one in place which could be used as a model.

His brother Howard (1896 - 1972) was also a jockey.
