Alfred Carratt

Alfred Carratt was born in London. An albino, he was apprenticed to Tom Jennings at Newmarket.

He went to ride in France in 1865, becoming champion jockey there from 1866 to 1885.

In England, he achieved his most notable success in the 1873 Cambridgeshire on 50-1 outsider Montargis, owned by Comte de Juigne.

Alfred Carratt died at Chantilly in 1912, aged 65

Alfred won the Prix de la Foret (a 7-furlong Group 1 race run originally at Chantilly before being transferred to Longchamp) a record five times – Normandie (1866), Mathilde (1871), Premier Mai (1874), Phenix (1878), Barberine (1885)
