Percy Allden
1900 - 1978
Percy Allden was born on February 16, 1900, the son of a successful bookmaker and owner. He was apprenticed firstly to a Mr Scholfield and then to Fred Pratt.
He rode his first winner on 12 June 1913 and was very successful on the Flat, winning the 1914 Ascot Stakes on Broadwood, along with the Queen’s Prize, Derby Cup and Bibury Cup. He also won the 1915 Stewards' Cup on Clap Gate.
However, weight soon defeated him and he turned to jumping, having his first ride in November 1919 and his first winner the following month, on Kaboodles in the Juvenile Hurdle at Newbury on December 30, 1919.
After retiring from the saddle, Squadron Leader Percy Allden became a successful trainer, sending out runners from his Gondola Stables in Bury Road, Newmarket. His racing colours were blue & white diamonds, red cap.
He died on March 1, 1978, aged 78.
