Doug Barrott

1947 - 1973

The son of a stud groom, Douglas Colin Barrott, born in Newmarket on February 22, 1947, apprenticed to Willie Stephenson from 1962 to 1967. He was unplaced on his first mount, Jiraobee at Newmarket on May 2, 1962; his first winner came just over a year later when he scored on Panastar at Leicester on May 20, 1963.His first winner over fences was Prince Cagire at Nottingham on February 6, 1967.

Tragedy struck at Newcastle on April 28, 1973. Riding French Colonist in the Whitbread Gold Cup, he was fatally injured when his mount fell: Doug's foot got trapped in the stirrup and he was dragged helplessly for many yards.

He died from his injuries on May 3, 1973, aged 26.

Doug left a widow and two young sons.

He had ridden 164 winners.
