Billy Baines

52-year-old Billy Baines, an ex-Newmarket jockey, hanged himself with a necktie at 39, Edward Square, Islington, North London, on Wednesday, 26 August, 1903.

During the course of his career he often wore the colours of Sir John Astley. An accident to his knee (on the Limekilns in which two horses had been killed) a few years before his unfortunate demise had incapacitated him from work, and he had been forced to live on allowances from the Jockey Club - £10 per year - and from his son, a jockey in Hungary.
