Lee Carter

Born in the West Midlands on April 17, 1969, Lee Carter was the first of his family to become involved with the world of racing. Being small and light, it was thought it would be the perfect career for him.

He served his apprenticeship at Epsom, initially with Reg Akehurst and then Terry Mills. He enjoyed a fair measure of success as a jockey and work rider. Horses the best-known horses he rode on the gallops were Bimsey, Where Or When and Mitchum.

He then worked as assistant trainer for John Akehurst at The Old Yard, Clear Heights. Following Akehurst’s sad death from cancer in March 2012, Lee took over the licence and won with his first runner - Prince of Sorrento - the following day.

Lee continues to send out horses from The Old Yard, Clear Heights Stables which are opposite Epsom racecourse and was originally the training yard of Ron Smyth.
